Lord of the Rings Book Club

2/23/2017

We are learning non-fiction reading and writing this term in English class.  Some of us miss reading a nice, relaxing novel, so we are starting a book club.  This is NOT part of any class (no assignments, no homework, no obligation). The only thing asked is that you read the assigned chapters before we come together.

See Ms. Palumbo so she can buy you a copy of the book!

Reminder: Chapters 1-3 discussed MONDAY, MARCH 6TH at 11AM!!!

I'll be using my Overcoming Stage Fright project to help us learn more about nonfiction reading and writing.  In class, I'll give you lots of examples and will model writing sections of my paper.  I plan to post the assignment examples below.

**Woo Hoo!  We've finished the novel!  I can no speak freely about poor Piggy. **

We are in the middle of Lord of the Flies.  I found this doodle on our whiteboard and was very proud of my dear, artistic student.  RCAA kids are the best!

Writing for Enjoyment

Is it possible to write for FUN?  As in, because you WANT to, and not because your English teacher says you have to?  Yep!  You bet.  RCAA students have been writing for enjoyment for years. Some past students have even been published.

Check out our new page to collect these gems!

Research Summary

11/13/2015

In the discovery phase of our project process, we write answers to our guiding questions.  These need to be presented in a way that showcases what we've learned.  The simplest way to do that is a RESEARCH SUMMARY!  Some students go beyond this to write a research paper like we learned how to do first term in Literacy class, but writing a research paper and proving a thesis is not necessary for every project.

Here are the directions for a research summary, in case you need a reminder.  They can also be found in the project folder that my advisory students get each term.

We had a mini-lesson on how to cite sources last week.  Several kids were absent, so I recorded it.
